After a three hour coach trip from Ljubljana it was nice to get to Rijeka. Our hotel, or more accurately our 'Botel' was moored in the harbour about ten minutes walk from the railway station and was handy for the city centre too. For the price paid (around £40 a night) it was pretty good and a little quirky too! In need of some food we found a great little pizzeria, although the ambience seemed more French than either Italian or Croatian. The prices were very much Croatian with wine at £7.50 a litre and the whole meal coming in at around £25.00! Rijeka is very much a working port city and if honest this area, including the railway station is not that inspiring. It certainly looks a little bit rough around the edges and there is not too much to see and do either. The central area of the city, particularly along The Korzo, is much nicer although a few streets back there is some terrible 1960/70/80s architecture to look at if you are that way inclined. Climbing the hill behind the city got us to Trsat Castle sitting 140 metres above the city. Great views could be had across to the sea and there was a nice cafe/bar to relax in before enjoying a nice Croatian lunch. The cevapcici meal I had was piled high with ten tasty meat treats and a large stack of french fries and was washed down with some Tomislav Black beer. At 7.3%, something I only noticed halfway through the second bottle, it was not really a quaffing ale despite my initial best efforts. It was a good job there was not a lot else to see and do in Rijeka in the afternoon. So that brings us to the end of our time in Rijeka as the alarm is set for 04.15 and hopefully a train departing at 05.45. An early start will get us to Split in time for an afternoon coffee and cake if all goes to plan!
