The little trip across a big ocean
We gathered some food for a picnic and off we went down the Great Ocean Road. It started as project post-WWI to give the vets some work and has turned into a pretty decent tourist industry. The first stop was Lorne for a picnic. The site was great - above the ocean with some rocks going out into the water. There were people trying to surf, but the waves weren't so good for it. Maybe an hour later, we pulled off the road at Cumberland River for a hike. There was a decent gradient on one side and either a really small mountain or a really big hill on the other side. In between were tracks for walking, tons of vegetation, and a river. Several times we had to make it across the river by hopping from rock to rock. Helen got a foot in the water at one point - I reckon it was pretty cool. There were even a couple of falls to enjoy. The odd thing about most of these hikes is that I only get to see a couple of birds. Australia has more nocturnal animals than diurnal (daytime) animals. Thus, the absence of critters. After the hike up the river, we went on the beach for a short while and Burttie showed me an old Aboriginal midden. That would be where they cooked all their shellfish. It was different. There were shells all over the place and it looks they are buried for layers into the ground. The ground was also much darker (from the fires). On the way back we stopped by the Angelsea Golf Course. It was sunset and there were hundreds of Kangaroos all over the place. I got to see a joey in his mom's pouch for the first time. His little arms were sticking out as she bent over to eat some grass. The rest of the day was really subdued. We ate in and watched some TV.
