The little trip across a big ocean
We started off easy today with a bike ride to the beach for coffee. The weather was windy and cool, but the ocean still showed vivid shades of blue, blue-green, and turquoise. Then it was off to Ballarat, about an hour and a half drive through the counrty side and farmland. They are in the middle of a drought and everything is light-colored where it should be thick and green. Ballarat is famous for Sovreign Hill. Its a recreation of the gold rush here in the late 1800's. They had it all: panning for gold, general stores, iron works, school, houses, hotel (bar), candle making, undertaker, and a tour down into the mines. We skipped the mine tour, as they wanted $5 for it and we had already paid $33 to get in. That seemed pretty ridiculous. But everything else was great. There were recreations of events as well: stage shows, wedding, coppers walking the streets. It was a fun day! The night got better though. I met John's brother and his family. We all went to an Indian place for supper. All I have to say is: I don't know how I made it this long without. The food was amazing. We all ordered an entre and sampled everything. It was just great!
