Today was huge! First off was the Immigration Museum. Australia is still a country of immigrants and has a very colorful history in dealing with all the issues that entails. Even today, 1/4 of all Aussies weren't born here. Fittingly, it is in the old Customs House, a beautiful building. Next, I made off for the Old Melbourne Gaol. It was erected in the 1800's and looks it. Its even scarier than the Shawshank Redemption jail. They have different displays in each cell and do a 2-man show of Ned Kelly's life that is pretty good. Ned Kelly is the Jesse James of Australia and a folklore hero. The jail has had other uses, including interning POWs and Allied Forces criminals in WWII.
I took break at Federation Square and watched all the goings on of the Darby Cup. They had a huge horse race today and in the Square there was a jumbo TV, several booths, and tons of people. Tuesday is the day, though. The Melbourne Cup is the race that stops a nation and the town will erupt. Even today was festive, with everyone dressed up and some truly frightening ladies' hats! I finished the afternoon at The Shrine of Remembrance. It is built in the style of very old, Greek maybe, architecture. It is mostly memorial with some museum exhibits. They had a pretty good one on nurses through the ages. Not what you think of with all things military, but vital to a healthy armed forces. So, good for them getting some recognition! I stayed for the lowering of the flag and The Last Post. After getting on a wrong tram, I finally made my way back and am contemplating what to do tonight. Perhaps, that is best left on the online report! Hehe!
