This morning I woke to clear blue skies, and the wind had died down. It was set to be another lovely day, albeit cooler than late with temperatures in the low 20s.
Today consisted of a tour around various local beauty spots.
After a spectacular drive through a forest of huge mountain ash trees and numerous fern trees, we arrived at Turtons Creek. A short path led to a lovely waterfull, surrounded by many more fern trees. A very tranquil and beautiful location.
We then ventured to Mt. Nicholl Lookout. A short and steep path led to the lookout and spectacular 360° views of the local surroundings.
After lunch we beach hopped around the bay, stopping at three beautiful beaches, each with their own character -Shallow Inlet Beach (great for small kids) Sandy Point Beach (for surfers and swimmers) and Waratah Beach, my host's nearest beach and virtually isolated even on a major holiday like today.
We then moved on to Walkerville North with the intention of walking over the headland to Walkerville South and back via the beach around the headland. But the tide was in so the route cut off. Instead we drove to Walkerville South. This was a small settlement that grew up around the lime industry and provided lime for many of the great buildings of Melbourne. However, it only lasted 50 years and the only evidence left on show are the crumbling remains of lime kills and a cemetery. All the workers houses have long since disappeared. It's still a lovely little spot and beach.
Then we went back home for a traditional Australia Day BBQ, with massive locally bred steaks that tasted fantastic. This is cattle country with fields full of cows that are fed purely on grass, which naturally make for great steaks.
On our travels around the area, we have spotted some interesting postboxes. It's great to see how innovative some people can be. There are a few examples in the photo album, if you're interested.
The schedulers at the Open have been kind to us and tomorrow we'll be a couple of the few Brits among the Aussies watching Kyrgios against Murray. Should be a great night.
C'mon Andy!
