This morning I woke to the sound of rain. However, by the time we were ready to leave, the worst had passed to be replaced by a few little showers.
We commenced our exploration of the locality with a trip into the town of Foster. As has been a common theme, the town was founded with the discovery of gold. It turned out to be a very rich but compact gold field which lasted about 20 years. It is now known as the gateway to the Wilsons Promontory and gets a lot of income from the tourist trade. It's a pretty little town that has everything you would need, really handy both for locals and those camping on the Prom.
My host then took me to a little known beach on the Corner Inlet. It is a desolate, marshy but pretty spot, and a protected wetland reserve.
Next we moved on to the Wilsons Promontory National Park. Usually a peaceful area, but due to the holiday weekend it was much busier than normal. Nevertheless, it was still not overly crowded and has some amazing scenery.
We visited Squeaky Beach, so called because the very fine white sand squeaks as you step on it, but then wouldn't you squeak if you were being trodden on all the time?
Then we went for a little walk along the Tidal River, which I believe is so named as it is a river subject to tides. Alongside the river is Whale Rock, which looks like a whale head jutting out of the cliff.
By now the wind had really picked up, so when we ventured onto Norman Beach, sand was being blown into our faces. This is a beautiful little beach at the end of the Tidal River.
The Wilsons Promontory is a stunningly beautiful location, but it was time to head home before going out for dinner.
On our way to dine, my host showed me the mango swamp at Port Franklin, an amazing place. The southernmost mango swap is just a few km from this one.
We dined at The Royal Standard Hotel in Toora. As this is beef country, it would've been rude not to order a porterhouse steak, followed by an ice cream cake, which was truly massive.
Once back home we watched tennis as first Aussie lad Kyrgiosv defeated Seppi and then Murray beat Dimitrov in two fantastic matches. They now meet in the quarter finals on Tuesday. I hope they are scheduled for the evening session on the Rod Laver Court, as I'll be there. It should be some atmosphere.
Happy Australia Day!
