MITAD DEL MUNDO - THE CENTRE OF THE WORLD..... Apparently.
We arrived to the official Mitad Del Mundo after flagging the bus down in the street and hopping on with no problems, I think our spanish must be improving or they saw two lost westerners attempting to flag down a bus not even at the bus stop.
We went to the official mitad del mundo after paying the $2 entry we went to the museum to learn all about the discovery of the ecuator, maps and other geography trivia, really impressive.
Wandered up to the monument that was built to represent the French Mission and also marks the ´´the ecuator´´ well what they thought was the Ecuator. Big red line down the centre of the pathway... lots of tourist taking photos in both hemispheres etc, I have to admit we did jump on this band wagon and got lots of pictures in both hemispheres and on the ecuator hahah!
But, we had heard that they do experiments or... tricks, that prove that you really are on the ecuator at the latitude 00.0 - we couldn´t find it anywhere then we discovered after scouring the lonely planet we needed to go to another museum that also claims to be at the centre of the world... Museo de Solar.
Now this bit was fun. Our guide Javier was wonderful and did teach us a lot whilst trying to us convince that we were actually at the centre of The World... I apologise my repetitiveness but I want to stress as much as Javier... Why? Because we´re at the centre of the World.
The first trick, sorry experiment was to balance an egg on a nail which to all of our surprise we all did it (and got a certificate) i did crack my egg though .. ooops!
Next was the water experiment, apparently when you are on the Ecuator water down a sink for example should go straight down ie not circle clockwise or counter clockwise and guess what... It didnt the water went straight down the plug. Next, the Southern Hemisphere literally two steps from the ``ecuator´´ th water should go down the plug in a ... I cant remember (oops) either way, it all worked and we videoed it so you´ll get to see, John Henry thinks he´s figured out the trick we´ll see if all of you can when we get back :)
There were a few others but htey were pretty lame. We did get shown round a typical amzonian house etc and the guniea pigs which he said were for lunch... no joke! NOt tried it yet, not sure if i can but will keep you updated.
And there you have it.... we have been the the Ecuator well as close as you can get I think!
Oh and they stamped your passports for you, we didn´t have ours :(
