Helen woke up and noticed more mosquito bites on her back, we think it might have been from the tubing yesterday. We had breakfast at 10am at a place called 'Luang Prabang Bakery'. Jay had a salami and cheddar cheese baguette and Helen had a ham and cheddar cheese baguette. It was very fresh and delicious. After breakfast we shopped around, Jay bought a good quality T Shirt for only 20 LAK (£1.50), which was a bargain. We then went back to our accommodation for a nap as we were tired from yesterday's excitement of river tubing, swinging and sliding into the river. We had lunch at 'A K Home' restaurant, Jay had pork spring rolls and Helen had beef noodle soup. We also shared a watermelon shake.
After lunch, we got a tuk tuk (50 LAK each) to the 'Poukham Cave' and 'Blue Lagoon' with Lee. The 20-30 minute journey was very bumpy and dusty, we had to pay 5 LAK to pass a bridge. Half way there, we came across a tuk tuk in a ditch. Lee and Jay helped to get it out of the ditch. They used a rope to pull the tuk tuk out, which was hard work. When we arrived at the Poukham Cave and Blue Lagoon, we had to pay an entrance fee of 10 LAK.
To get into the cave, we walked up steep and rocky stairs with a handrail made from bamboo. The cave was absolutely huge, it was the biggest cave that we have seen. As we walked further in, it was pitch black, Jay used his IPhone's flash as a
torch and Lee rented a head torch, between us we had enough light to explore. It
was slippery inside the cave, which was quite dangerous. We were very impressed with the cave, it was magnificent, the rock formations were amazing, some had a
glittery appearance.
Once finished in the cave, we walked back downstairs to the 'Blue Lagoon' to cool off. The water was cold but was a beautiful deep blue colour. It had a large tree
hanging over it, the locals (mainly children) and tourists were swinging off and jumping from the tree. Lee, Jay and Helen all had a swing and jumped into the Blue Lagoon, it was a great way to end the day. It was getting dark and started to rain so we went with the tuk tuk driver back to our accommodation. He was so patient,
friendly and smiley, he waited for us to finish even though he knew that a storm
was coming and was going to be a difficult journey back. We got caught in the
heavy downpour with high winds, we were only half sheltered by the roof of the tuk
tuk. We got splashed with muddy water by a x4x4 vehicle overtaking us.
For dinner we wanted to eat at the 'Luang Prabang Bakery' but it was closed so we
ate at the 'A K Home' restaurant. Jay had a local dish called 'Beef Lap' which was
minced beef, garlic, mint and long beans. He had this with steamed rice. Jay
thought his dish was quite bland. Helen had fried chicken with pineapple and
steamed rice which she really enjoyed.
Later in the evening, Helen rested in the room as she was feeling tired and Jay went out to the 'Aussie Bar' for drinks. He got chatting to the bar staff called Wan
and found out a bit more about the Laos lifestyle and culture.
