We got picked up by a pick-up truck at 9.30am then got transferred onto a minibus. The journey to Vang Vieng was very scenic with mountains, hills and forests. We passed many small villages on the way.
We arrived at 2.45pm, which was quicker than expected. We got dropped off in the town centre, where Jay looked for suitable accommodation. Helen waited in a nearby hotel with the bags. Jay managed to find a newly built guesthouse called 'Mexaiphon' for 50,000 LAK (£3.80) per night, which was such a bargain and the cheapest accommodation so far on this trip. The room was medium sized, very clean, had a powerful shower and fan. And also the softest fleece blanket. The owner said that we can pay at the end of the stay, which was trusting of him.
After a much needed shower, we went out to explore the near vicinity. We stopped off at a restaurant to share a fruit salad which cost 12,000 LAK. This was refreshing in the humidity. At this restaurant, it had a beautiful view of the river and limestone cliff.
Later on in the day, we browsed around some stalls then had dinner at the 'Norkeo' restaurant. On the way to dinner, Jay saw this western guy walk by with the owner of our hostel, this guy did the same journey as us from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng. For dinner, Jay had fried beef noodles with a large bottle of Beer Laos. Helen had beef noodle soup. It was a tasty dinner.
In the evening, we went to the 'Aussie Bar' near our hostel for drinks. This bar was full of western backpackers. We sat on a raised deck where there were cushions for us to relax on. Jay had a couple of large bottles of 'Namkhong' beer, which is a new beer. Helen tried a Laos whisky with pineapple juice, this was a nice drink and different to what Helen usually drinks. Whilst drinking, to Helen's surprise, she saw
an ex colleague, Gary Tucker who was with his friend, walking pass. We caught up
quickly as Gary did not have spare cash for drinks as he was leaving the next day.
As the evening went by, we got chatting to one of the bar staff called Wan, who
was from Luang Prabang and very friendly.
