me around the place...
Life at LEAP has continued much as before however two of their maths teachers are away (one stuck in Tanzania and one recovering from having her wisdom teeth removed) so I'm mostly helping cover their lessons. Teaching circle areas and cuboid volumes to the Foundation Classes and Transformations to the Grade 10's is fun but at times is actually quite a challenge. However yesterday i got enlisted to help update the library at LEAP so that will be keeping me busy over the next few days.
On Friday Miss Staniforth and her son Sam arrived with, coincidently, a few other visitors to the school so a bit of a show was put on in Community to welcome everyone. The pupils put on a display of singing and dancing that was just too incredible to describe! It really blew me away and i know everyone will be terribly jealous to hear that a Miffy Music and Drama trip to Cape Town is planned for two years time. Evil huh?
After Community Bones (Sports/LO teacher) gave us a tour of Langa. Langa is the closest township and the one from which 90% of the LEAP pupils come from. It was actually much more than i expected; more a community than just a place to live. There were a lot of shacks made from anything that could be sourced (tin, wood, old doors, for sale signs etc) but also a lot of small concrete buildings. However even when people from Langa get more financially stable they don't necessarily leave, but instead extend their homes or build new ones. This means they can remain in their community and continue their culture.
A two day weekend is something new for me but definitely something i could get used to! I slept in till 12 on Saturday which was bliss and actually what i really needed. After a lazy early afternoon we (Gareth, Virginia and I) went shopping at a place called Canary Walk (i think). Its a bit like Bristol Mall but much much larger; it had a multiplex cinema and several fancy restaurants inside as well as shops. So we shopped for a bit (in an attempt to find something white to wear to the all white themed 'Christmas in July' thing Virginia is having), ate at a place called CTFM (i had sushi for the first time) and then watched Superman Returns. I didn't find anything white to wear however i subsequently found a white dress in Woolworths (not like ours but instead more like our M&S).
Sunday I lazed about. Monday and Tuesday as before at LEAP and today is Wednesday!
