me around the place...
I am currently sitting in the staffroom of LEAP. I have to go cover a Foundation Maths lesson in a while so this is only going to be short. But so far its been amazing. Im staying with the most lovely family (Gareth and Anne) who have made me feel very at home. I arrived Sunday afternoon and have been thrown in first thing Monday. I wake at 6 as we leave at 7:30 each morning to get to Pinelands (we stay in an area called Clemont). I spent most of the morning of the first day in English lessons with Jenni repeating myself to endless classes 'im Helen, im 18, i come from England.' But I quickly got ambushed and told to cover Maths classes because one of the teachers is still visiting Tanzania. I embaressed myself in the first lesson by forgetting how to work fractions but im slowly gettting back into it. All that a-level stuff I thought i could omit from my mind is now having to be pulled kicking and screaming into action. Though, like i said, this afternoon Ive got a Foundation class so thats Pythagoras etc. And Luckily John (the Head) has decided to get a sub teacher for tomorrow and onwards as their not sure when the maths teacher is to return.
What else to say.....? The weather is a bit cold here but nothing compared to England at Winter. I told them they were officially not allowed to call it Winter when people are playing on the beaches and eating ice-cream!
They have a thing here called Community. Its their version of an Assembley but its not at all like that; the students run it and it mostly involves pupils (or learners as they are called here) standing up and sharing with the rest of the school (150) what they have done and how it affected them. Its scaringly open here. Nothing is off-topic. Very different to the British way of things and something I think its gonna take me a bit of time to get used to.
Man. United are playing the local SA team, the Kaiser Chiefs (the band was named after the team not vice versa), tonight and so ill probably be watching that on tv this evening and chatting to Gareth till late (what made me so ridiculously tired today).
So, im having fun and its only been two and a half days since touch down in Cape Town. I gotta go cover that class now. Hope your all having a great time. Love to hear from you......xx
(p.s. sorry to Steff if I made any appalling grammatical mistakes)
