WEDNESDAY 9TH FEBRUARY
By the time I got to Caño Negro last night it was dark and cold and the rain was pouring but I found my way to the Rangers Stattion to check in overnight. Unfortunately, they changed the rules and I couldn´t stay there but they showed me the cheapest place around. The owners were really lovely and showed me to a wooden cabin where I promptly locked myself in for a little cry of tiredness. I had a quick stern word with myself and a long cold shower to scrub the dirt and grime away and I felt ready to start again. With my hand drawn map I set off to find food and debate whether I was getting the first bus out of there in the morning.
I dont quite know what it is here but the cockrels are so time-confused and again at 4am they all started their constant high pitch calls until 7am. AAggghhh!!! Apart from that when I woke up I realised how glad I was I didnt jump on another bus because the huge garden was so beautiful, full of tropical trees, bright flowers and fruit trees and it is right on the river. I had a wander down and found an old canoe which prompted me to carefully construct a spanish request to borrow it. Somehow, I got it right and I found myself lolling about on the river watching storks or herons or egrits (i cant tell the difference) and floating around with my feet hanging over the edge catching some rays. That all ended when I saw a pair of eyes watching me from the water, I sat up, pulled the paddle in and sat very very still. The eyes disappeared and then I felt something brush the underside of the canoe and an air bubble appeared next to me. That was enough! I raced as quickly as I could back to land to recover from my crocdile sighting.
When I went back out later I felt a bit braver so I got as close as I could to the crocodile to try and get a photo. At dusk I didnt see many more exotic birds but a gorgeous grey bird that was huge and jonked like a geese and a little black bird with scarlet red wings. All the birds were dive bombing for fish that kept jumping out of the river and it was lovely listening to them all chattering away with the howler monkeys in the forest giving it some. It would have been a great place to fish for dinner!
THURSDAY 10TH FEBRUARY
Sod it, if you cant beat em, join em. So, when the rooster started to holler I joined him (im getting up that is) Still want to throttle the fat chicken though... Today was an exciting day because it marked my move down to the sunny shores of the caribbean, home of pirates and excess rum consumption and after 20 hours sat on a bus, I think I deserve it!
