MONDAY 24TH JANUARY
After a strangely calm trip to heathrow all hell broke loose as I realised that I needed a visa for the states and could not check in without one. No worries, i was assured as ou can just go to the internet cafe and buy one. Except the US website had crashed and I made my flight with 5 minutes to spare. So, 40 pounds down I finally started the journey to New York. Not a good start!
I had also totally forgtten how hard travelling is on the body and after a long sleepless night on the cold hard floor of the airport I dragged my black swollen eyes on anyother plane to sunnier climbs. It was sooo nice to see the blue sky and feel the heat of the sun through the windows of the plane, it got to the point when the glass was too hot to touch - sweeet!!!
TUESDAY 25TH JANUARY
I woke up super early this morning with the sun and chilled out until my first crazy bus journey started. It only took 4 hours and 3 pounds to get to La Fortuna which was awesome and the hostel was awesome. It was painted a vile purple colour and was filled with people bumming around and making plans. I decided after much thought to wander up to some free waterfalls with a watering hole and rope swing until I figured things out. It was soo lovely, 2 sweet little waterfalls into a deep pool of water with a rope swing and apart from making sure no one ran off with my bag it was nice to chill out in the cool water instead of ebing sweaty all the time. I met up with a group of PHD biology students from the states who were mostly there to bird watch but they were still great fun and i had a good laugh over a beer in the garden with them later as we made plans for the following day.
WEDNESDAY 26TH JANUARY
This morning we got a taxi to the Volcan Arenal national park amd set off. It was so beautiful with some great views of the volcano and of laguna arenal and it was pretty cool to see all the lava flows frozen in time on the side of the mountain but it was inactive so thats all i got to see. Matt, one of the group wasnt so much into watching birds like the others so we wandered off to see more of the park and get told off by the guides for getting too close to the toxic fumes... while the others stopped and watched throught their binos a lot which worked well. At the end myself and matt decided to leave early and walk to what we thought was the hot springs. We walked for over 4km down a dudty road and found the location of....a cold river so we had a hitch a lift back to the park as it took soo long. In the meantime the others had cakked a taxi to come and get us and we must have crossed paths so of course when we got back they werent there, A complere total f*** up finished by gettin scammed by the taxi man. Still, we ended up swimming in some hot springs which was ace and then hitched a ride back to town, i totally underestimated how far it was but maanged to get the german couple who picked us up into conversation by b****ing about fat americans. some thinsg never change...
It was such a lovely day and I met some lovely people but it is now time to move on again and theyre going back to princeton to finish their course, adios amigo
