Since our last blog, we spent a few days in Banyos (where we last blogged from). During that time, Kerry and I both partook in some white water rafting and canyoning. I did some grade 5 rapids which were a lot of fun. My group managed to stay in the boat, although i half fell out. I managed to keep my foot in the leg strap but the rest of me was outside the raft. One of my mates hauled me back into the raft before i was one with the water.
The occupants of Kerry´s raft ended up in the drink after about 2 mins of starting. It sounds like it was quite funny, their rafting guide wouldn´t let them back in the raft until they had retrieved all of their oars, which are quite expensive apparently.
Banyos has hot thermal springs, as there is an active volcano about 20kms away from the town. We soaked up the hot water one night which was very relaxing. The volcano is still quite active, it showers the town in ash quite regularly, a lovely spot though.
After 2 full days in Banyos we headed for a big city called Cuenca. Cuenca had a pretty cool local market and a couple of inca ruins which justified stopping for a day and then we crossed the border into Peru and arrived at a small coastal (yet desert) town called Mancora. Mancora consists of 1 street which can be walked in about 20 mins, it is a lovely little town and the surf is quite good too. Some friends are having surf lessons as i write this.
Last night we caught Tuk tuk´s to a beach about 20km away where we met up with another tour group that is doing the same route as us. We spent an afternoon playing soccer, volley ball, and drinking punch while rotating 2 pigs over hot coals. It was a great night and Kerry is laid up in bed today which "punch head". We have another 2 days in Mancora before we head off to the next place so will update more when we get there.
Adios, Heath
