Just a quick from Huaraz. Huaraz is the trekking and climbing centre of Peru. It is based at 3000m above sea level, we have experienced some altitude related symptoms while here.
Yesterday i went Ice climbing up in the hills from Huaraz. We drove into the mountains to about 5000m above sea level and then hiked to a glacier which has a ice cliff wall of about 6-7m. The altitude made it so hard to do the climbing, but it was a lot of fun. We experienced a storm while up there and had a really heavy snowfall. For some people on our trip who had never seen snow, it was quite a treat.
Today Kerry and I did a down hill mountain bike ride from 4,300m to 3000m. It was quite hard going, a lot of it was off track, but it was really nice riding through little villages. Most of the locals are still in awe to see white people.
The group went out for Kerrys birthday the other day, went to a seafood restaurant. Our tour leader got her a massive chocolate and caramel cake which went down a treat.
Tomorrow we are back on the truck and are heading to Lima. Will write more from there.
