Rio Gallegos was not a town that we planned on visiting for any length of time however due to the bus from Puerto Madryn it left us with very little choice. Originally the 19 hour bus journey would have gotten us to Rio Gallegos by 1pm the following day so we could get a connecting bus straight to El Calafate at 2pm. However the bus was meant to arrive to collect us at 7pm but was 2 hours late and then it wouldn't start! Another 5 hours later we finally left Puerto Madryn at 12:30am! We arrived at Rio Gallegos at 7pm after the worst bus journey so far! Generally you have headphones on the bus so you can choose to listen to their Spanish music/films or not. This was like the Vengabus and unfortunatly for us we was positioned under a speaker! What has got to be the worst Spanish music I have ever heard blasted on and off for the whole 19 hours mixed up nicely with the screaming baby at the back! Haha, luckily I had ear plugs for us both! On the way here we saw some beautiful landscapes! Argentina/Patagonia we found is generally flat, dry and sandy and the views stretch for miles and miles often with little streams wisping here and there and herds of LLama dashing about! The yellow dusty looking landscape contrasts nicely with the blue sky. Anyway we arrived at Rio Gallegos not expecting much as the guidebook gave us little information about this town, and decided to stop over night as the bus to El Calafate is an additional 4 hours so would have got us there too late at night. We booked into a cheap hotel, bought some pizza and a good few bottles of alcohol before settling down to an English film and relaxing for the night. It all turned out well in the end! Rio Gallegos is a pleasant little town and although there is nothing to do, it does hold some lovely outdoor sports clothes shops. I think if you had some coin you could have a brilliant shopping trip here! Also stepping off the bus in this town was like getting off a plane in England when you have been on holiday! We are now hitting the colder temperatures and is a nice and refreshing 5ish degrees! A lovely break from the heat and I get to try all my lovely new soft fleeces which I bought before we came! Now awaiting the bus to El Calafate to camp and look at the famous Moreno Glacier! Exciting times! Hayls and Jonathan x
