Saturday we awoke to see the seas calm, the sun out & waited nervously to find out the ferry would be sailing. Liz & Paul would understand our apprehension as the alternative of standing on buses for a couple of hours hanging on for dear life winding around the amalfi coast was not a pleasant option.
We sailed mid morning & it was the clearest day, we could see Capri which previously we hadn't seen.
We sailed into Salerno raced to the train station to catch 1130 train. Decided it would be too close time wise only to be told by this delightful old Italian guy who was there when Liz & Paul left that the train was 15 mins late. So two wins Sat.
Clearly this old guy loves the trains & spends his days informing people at the station
train times & platforms.
We wondered if Louis may one day also do this as he has an obsession with trains & buses!
Liz & Paul didn't have the best experience in Rome. They warned us they were ripped off by a taxi without a meter, pickpocketed twice, paid top price for a hotel & then paid top price for breakfast at the hotel.
We then thought maybe we probably should have bypassed Rome. We had been
here last trip so had seen most of the sights. However all booked so headed there.
Got a taxi without problem to the hotel. We are 15 mins out of the centre by car.
Beautiful old hotel, cheap by Rome standards, full of Italian antiques, has a history of being the head quaters for the allies during ww II. Great breakfast included. Looks like more Italian tourists than other nationalities staying here.
We are in a beautiful well off area of Rome where the embassies are. Very safe to wander day & night.
Went to a local eatery with a delightful young guy who was our waiter, had the best steak we have every had.
He gave us free drinks at the end! We tipped him well!
Dressed up yesterday with money belts & headed to city. Went to Pantheon which we didn't see last trip , wandered the river side & saw St Peters nearby & went to piazza del Popolo.
Had lunch at piazza Navona, strolled back to the Pantheon to catch a taxi back to hotel.
Went for a big walk around the area & had 10 euro all you can eat delicious Italian food with drink included at the same eatery as previous night. The young waiter who looked after us so well Sat night shook our hands & said we would have very good red wine!
It was!
This place was full of Italians & the waiters didn't speak English which makes it a far more authentic experience than the tourist spots.
We have enjoyed Rome & are glad we came.
The young lady in the amazing heals walked confidently around the piazza we were in, in Rome. An amazing challenge!
We are off to Cortona today.
