Day 61
Today we took a day trip to Hope. I just had to see a place with such a sweet name.
Along the way we stopped to view Kenai Lake. Gorgeous. Then we dropped in at the US Forest Service Office and Work Center, so Michael could see how it had changed, and so he could reminisce with some of the guys there.
Our next stop was Moose Pass, population 189, a cute mountain village Upper Trail Lake. As I was taking a picture of the "Welcome to Moose Pass" sign, a nice woman with a horse started chatting with me. Michael was waiting in the car. In our conversation, I mentioned that my husband used to live in Seward in the 80s when he worked for the Forest Service, and she laughed, saying "I worked for the Seward Forest Service in the 80s!" So of course, we went over to the car and they remembered each other. Her name is Annie and she now makes silver jewelry, Annie's Jewelry, which we had seen in a store in Seward. It is amazing that in this huge state, Michael is running into friends from 25 years ago. Gotta love it!
On our way again, we saw a moose grazing a little ways off the highway, then we pulled over for our picnic lunch at Lower Summit Lake.
We continued on, driving to a lookout point on Turnagain Arm. We waited until almost 6pm to see the bore tide, but gave up and left. It was supposed to be in around 4:48pm. We did, however, see some stand up paddlers on the water, which seemed kind of dangerous to me.
We then drove around to the other side of Turnagain Arm on our way to Hope. Our first view of Turnagain Arm on this side (about 30 minutes since we left the spot where we had waited to view the bore tide) showed that high tide had come in. Darn, we missed it, oh well, it was pretty spectacular to see water everywhere, where 30 minutes before it was mostly mud flats. Michael says I can see the bore tide on YouTube . . .
We continued our drive to Hope which is a darling historic village,
population 200. We had a delicious dinner in the Seaview Cafe, grilled fresh halibut and fresh organic salads; oh and we split a piece of apple pie a la mode - yum! It is wonderful that these tiny towns, out in the boonies, offer meals with such fresh healthy ingredients. While we ate, we could hear live music coming from the Seaview Bar next door.
Leaving Hope we saw part of a beautiful rainbow in the road ahead of us. Lovely day.
