San Francisco - South Lake Tahoe
OMG, it's so big………………
We took the easy option to pick up the rental car and booked a taxi for our already bulging bags. But before we set off I had to pay one more visit to the nearby Italian bakery. I had discovered the great smelling shop the day before when I went in search of bread for breakfast. I was rewarded with the lightest tastiest Ciabatta and out of curiosity I decided to try one of the slabs of flavoured Foccacia. It was heavenly and devoured easily by my mob.
So I stocked up with two different flavours, tomato and leek, along with some giant sized healthy muffins ( if there is such a thing) to keep us going on our trip to Tahoe.
Hubbie looked surprisingly at home as we cruised the freeways in our super-sized V8 5.4L black beast of a rental car. When son number two first set eyes on it he called shotgun for the next week!
Although congested the route was easy to drive and we stopped just past the Bay bridge for a coffee and muffin stop, before hitting the road to explore the old town of Sacramento.
A friend had suggested a midway point of interest for our four hour drive. Surrounded by a network of highways and modern glass tower blocks was the preserved old town Sacramento.
It was like being transported back in time to the cowboy era. The sun was strong , the roads dusty, the sound of the railway filled the air, while the boardwalks creaked beneath our feet.
Within an hour we had fully explored the four road town, so we dived into a New Orleans style Bar & Grill to try some gumbo and ribs.
The food was great and we managed to render our waiter speechless after leaving him a 25% tip. He was exceptionally efficient, very sweet and shy. He filled our glasses as soon as their levels dropped to a few centimetres and provided us with samples of the house specialities before we ordered. A refreshing change to France.
Back in our monster truck we headed east and climbed the Eldorado freeway to which became flanked with snow as we climbed to cross a pass. I eagerly scanned the woods for any sign of bears but my only reward was an outstanding view of the lake as we descended into the Tahoe basin.
After a quick stop in the local supermarket in the town to stock up with goodies for the next few days we wound our way through the forests of Heavenly searching for our next home from home. An hour later we were relaxing from our day on the road with a beer in the hot tub listening for bears.
