Orphanage- Pros
So far, I realize I've made it seem like a really terrible place but its not at all - it's actually one of the wealthier orphanages due to the Buddhist Temple relation, so they recieve many gifts, toys and money. Just in the past few days, we have had over 20 foreign visitors bringing gifts (apparently because of Tet; their New Years and only big holiday, many people give around now to get in their "good deeds" with Buddha.) Each time a visitor comes and brings gifts, the kids line up and sing "Caaaaam on, Caaaaam on" (thank you in Viet) and on a busy day, they can grow tired of it! The children each have their own bed and locker area, and the older ones have their "own" clothes and a few personal items. I know I told most people that I would be teaching english here, but they use the term loosley, and really I just talk to them in English and help them with their homework. All school school aged children attend public school (some go in the morning and some go in the afternoon, so I see them all at least once a day)and have English classes so they can usually converse well. The little usually ones know basic words. They are fed VERY well; I eat with them and they are given portions too big for me! But they have to finish every bite of it, so I usually do as well. They also sing a Buddhist prayer before they eat that is very beautiful, I'll try and video it sometime. I basically just play with them and making up for lost affection is a job in itself! I am constantly peeling kids off my back, hip, arms and legs, and if I am sitting, I always have a child in my lap. We usually sing songs, read books, play outside, do homework, or talk with them in their rooms. The babies usually wander all over so they try to join in whatever we do. One has grown particularly attached to me, she's about 1 and I usually have to be holding her or her hand the majority of the day. If I give the kids attention she's fine but if I give any of the babies attention so swats at them and goes "ANNNNNN!!!" Oh, I don't think I've mentioned so far, but right now there are over 200 kids from age one month to 18. My internet time is up so I'll keep posting updates when I can.
