Transportation
Well there are about 5 options here when you want to get around - cyclo (a cart w/ wheels and a bicycle like thing in front operated by a man- not for long journeys), motor bike (think Vespa scooter but not as nice), taxi (VERY expensive), bus or walking. Traffic usually has no direction, lanes, traffic lights, road signs, or order in general. You hear endless persistant honking because that's what's done if you want someone to move out of the way, and some honk for no reason at all. Since the orphanage is about 45 min - 2 hours away depending on your transportation, I thought to take the bus - cheap, easy and reliable, I thought. Not so much - To get from District 8 where I live to District 2 (the Dieu Giac) requires 3 buses. So on my first day, I easily got on the fist one from the house to the Ben Than Market (with a little running and jumping-on action) and proceeded to hop on bus 99 which was the right bus - but going the wrong direction. Each bus number has 2, so 2 bus 99's - one goes north and one goes south. So I ended up heading most of the way back home, and back to the market, after waiting about 20 min for it to stop, change drivers and get petrol. Then I got on the next bus which was fine, and got the last one in District 2, a mini cart type bus that sat 6. I showed the driver the address and he nodded so I rode for an hour (it's about a 15 min drive) and I kept pointing at the address (nod, nod) and we finally came to the end of the route and I got off and pointed and he went "sorry, I dont know." So with help from a local, I got the a good one who took me there - I was on buses that day for nearly 4 hours and used 5 bus tickets. So now I have a great motorbike driver who is not as cheap, but very reliable and speaks English, so its well worth it, and it takes about 45 min to get to work. The only con is that when you ride motor bike you constantly inhale large amounts of dust and exhaust so you have to wear a surgical mask, but everyone does so it's no big deal. I'll be really be grateful when I am home to hop in the car and go!
