Shouldn´t come as a surprise, but Iceland is not exactly warm. The average summer high (yes, the HIGH tempurature of the day) in June is 13 C, not like July when the average high will reach a sweltering 14 degrees C. Despite this, the weather has actually been quite nice, we had one sunny day and the rest have been cloudy with occasional light rain. The inland road was closed because of snow until yesterday when it was finally opened.
I´ve seen puffins, gysers, glaciers, hot springs, waterfalls and volcanos - though none are active right now, so we can´t see burning lava, just evidence of old eruptions. I´ve seen the old church and a new opera building, and walked the streets of the main part of town.
The photo is a small hot spring (though the sign says it is a gyser, it doesn´t shoot up periodically) about 1 to 2 yards across that is so hot the water is actually boiling. As you walk up to it, you can hear it boiling and bubbling. They use these hot springs to provide all the hot water (so the shower has a slight sulpher smell) and to heat their houses. So I amend my previous statement - Iceland is cold except for the occasional very small spots.
Iceland has been fun, the beer is good, the prices are high (though probably in line with the rest of western Europe), the scenary has been outstanding, the keyboards are annoying (because they need to add keys for their extra letters like ö or Æ or Þ nothing is in the right place and the label doesn´t always match). So far I am having fun, not ready to come back yet.
Till næsta tíma,
Cheryl.
