After leaving Brisbane we got stuck in traffic heading south, then we finally saw signs for Surfers Paradise. The k's got smaller and smaller and we were getting excited to be nearly there, then the signs disappeared, after driving for another 5 minutes we realised we had completely driven through and missed surfers paradise. We did a U-turn and headed back, since we had done a lot of research before we obviously had no idea where any of the campsites were. So after a while of not being able to find a parking space Rachel leapt out to go to the Tourist Information centre while I carried on driving around. I finally found a space on the sea front, parked up and paid $2.70 for an hour, then 2 minutes later Rachel rang and said she knew where the campsite was, should've waited instead of paying. I told her where I was then waited, it should have only been a 5 minute walk so after 10 minutes I started wondering what shop she had got to, so I rang her…. No answer. I waited another 10 minutes, still no Rachel so I rang her again……No answer. I then started worrying a bit, I continuously rang her about 5 times, then was really starting to worry. Then finally she called me back, apparently she had her phone on silent and had gotten lost. She didn't show up with any shopping bags so I guess I should believe her.
We drove along the sea front and found a campsite on 'Main Beach' and pitched up. Since it was getting late we popped dinner straight on. Then Rachel skyped Claire to wish her a happy birthday (happy birthday Claire, hope you had a wonderful birthday). We then sat relaxing in the lounge watching Mrs Doubtfire before heading to the tent.
The next morning we arose and hired a surfboard from the campsite and headed to the beach. I left Rachel sunbathing and reading her book on a very windy beach while I headed to the sea. After 15 minutes of fighting against the wind blowing me towards the no surfing area of the beach and the chaotic waves knocking me left, right and back I finally got to a decent spot. I leapt on and caught a wave but it wasn't long enough to stand on. I continued for around an hour before popping back to see Rachel for a bit of a rest. I headed out another couple of times but it was too rough ad windy to get to any of the good waves in the deep water (or that was my excuse anyway). After doing a bit of body boarding and seeing countless other surfers not standing I decided to call it a day after about 3 hours of being bashed from side to side.
I headed back up the beach to try find Rachel, I spent a while searching but couldn't see in the area where I thought we were was another couple……then I realised it wasn't another couple it was Rachel being chatted up by some guy. I went over and we sorted our bits out then headed back towards the car, saying bye to the weird guy who had apparently scared Rachel as she was getting to a scary part of her book when he had approached, then wouldn't go away. Guess it was a good job I came back when I did. We cleaned up and dumped the surfboard back then drove down to Surfers Paradise town centre. We had a wonder around town and the shops for a bit before we headed back to the car and onwards to Byron Bay.
