We started day two with a drive through Ho Chi Minh City. Our First stop was one of the local markets. The markets here are definitely something that needs to be experienced. The place is full of small stores that are absolutely packed. There is very little space to move around and if you look for slightly too long at anything you are instantly hassled by the owner trying to make a sale. Some will even follow you as you walk away and at one stage Dinsy had a scarf wrapped around him trying to convince him to buy. Most markets we have seen have alot of bags, shoes, clothes lots of different fruits and foods and a very distinctive smell.
From the markets we went to the Reunification Palace and the Vietnam War Museum. The museum was very interesting presenting the Vietnam war from the perspective of the Vietnamese. Some of the photos were very graphic, particually the shots of the effects of agent orange.
After the museum we continued driving around stopping at; the sea goddess temple, a notable post office, a big cathedral and at various parks and statues. We stopped for some pho for lunch at 'Pho 24'. Pho is a plain rice noodle with beef or chicken, it was served with a selection of herbs and spices and as Koskey and I found out a particually hot orange chili!
Next was the Cu Chi tunnels, these where tunnels used by the Viet Cong during the Veitam War. The tunnels have a total length of of over 250km and were dug under the cover of night using small picks and straw baskets. The network of tunnels consist of three layers and have bamboo traps all over for any intruders.
We all had a go firing an AK-47 at the firing range. This was good fun but I think we could all do with a bit of target practice!
Between our tour guide and the museums etc, today we learnt alot about Vietnam's history up to and including the Vietname War. We went for a walk later for a look around the streets. During dinner we were haggled by 'Beckham' a young boy selling fans, bracelets and other cheap touristy items. I will try to upload a video later of him convincing us to buy by playing 'paper sissors rock' and dancing like Michael Jackson.
