Day 16 - Sunday 8th July 2012
War Museum, Oil Tunnels, Stokes Hill Wharf
It was hot over night. We definitely didn't need the doona.
Today we started at the War Museum. It was amazing. The displays and stories about the first bombing in Darwin on 19th February 1942 were an eye opener. There was a 12 minute film clip which made you realize just how real it was. We both felt quite emotional. There are stories from a lot of individuals who experienced that day, and a lot of information about that time in Darwin.
We drove into the city to get some lunch, expecting it to be a bit like Melbourne. We were very wrong. It is more like a big town than a major city. We had lunch at 3pm and headed to the oil tunnels.
These were built after the war, by pick, shovel and hand held jack hammers. I think there were 10 built and they are enormous. I will put on a photo of the sign that tells you their size. You can walk down one and there are photos from the war time.
We walked passed the wave pool and on to Stokes Hill Wharf. We will definitely come here for dinner. Lots of choices and not expensive.
We went to Mindl Market and on to the beach to watch the sun set.
The market had a great atmosphere with buskers and lots of people, lots of food and other stalls.
We paddled in the water at the top of Australia and asked the life guard about crocs. She said they sometimes swim passed but don't come in to the bay. They like the mangroves not the open beaches. She said it was too cold for stingers so it is OK to swim.
The sunset was beautiful and the sky after was a brilliant red. So different to the sunsets down south.
