Day 8 - Mt Isa to Banka Banka Station
We were up at 7, on the road to Macca's for a quick brekky at 7:25 and driving out at 7:45. We have a few miles to cover today. Fuel is the same price as Ky!!!
There were a couple of vans on the road going east already. We thought they must have had a really early start until we stopped at a WWII info plaque at a free camp spot. It was packed.
The info was about the road that was built between Mt Isa and the Stuart Highway during the war. The old road was there so you could see the old and the new.
There was a cyclist out here. He must have been very lonely.
The land around Mt Isa is hilly but down the road it became flat and grassy. We got another chip in the windscreen (4th) when someone passed us, and I noticed we have blown a headlight. Oh well if that's the worst that happens it will be OK. There is a lot of road kill - kangaroos along here.
We stopped at the Cammoweal Roadhouse for fuel and a coffee to go. Fuel was $1.899/ltr.
There is a lot of wattle out and some red flowers we stopped and checked. I think it is grevillea. The termite mounds are bigger and lots of them in the treed areas.
We had lunch at Barkly Station. Ithas accommodation and a caravan and looks a nice place to stop. Not for us this time.
We crossed the NT border and put our watches back 1/2 hour.
We turned north on the Stuart Highway and arrived at Banka Banka Station at about 5pm. What a great spot this is.
Bob and Marie manage it and they do a good job. They are very friendly. We had a lawn site for the camper and the camp kitchen is good. The bar opens at 6pm at the same time as Bob lights the fire. We climbed the ridge to watch the sun set, cooked tea and went and chatted to other campers and caravan era around the fire. We would love to have stayed a couple of days. It's a good place for a rest and there is a walk to a waterhole that we didn't do this time.
