Day 9 - Banka Banka to Mataranka
1st July 2012
We had a leisurely start to the day because it is shorter than yesterday. We were on the road at 9:10am. We stopped at Renner Springs for fuel and Elliott for coffee. The caravan park at Elliott is closed.
The landscape is hilly and the trees are getting taller. So are the termite mounds. Traffic was steady and most caravans were traveling at 90kmh. It didn't take long to pass them, between bends, hills and oncoming traffic.
We called in to the Daly Waters Pub. We would have stayed if we had time. It is a tiny place with LOTS of caravans and campers. The pub had lots of things pinned to the walls and ceiling and a beaut outdoor area. They have an entertainer every night. We both had a Hilux burger for lunch. Check out the photo - it was big! Merv had a couple of beers.
We checked out the WWII runway (it's still used today) and on the road at 2. It was an in eventful drive to Mataranka and we came straight to the Elsey camp grounds. It is massive and there is a big common area with a bar, bistro, stage etc.
We put on some washing and went for a look around. It is hot today - 28 degrees. It was very hot in the car.
We walked towards the springs through an area of palms. There is a colony of red bats that live in the palms - up to 250,000 of them. The springs look nice but no time for a swim this time.
There were some singers who were quite good. - easy to listen to. Their two sons joined in on the guitar and drums. They were very good. It is NT day today so there was a fireworks display. If there were OHS reps here they would have had a fit!! But no one got hurt.
