Day 11 - Tuesday 3rd July
Gunlom, Kakadu
It was good to sleep in and not have to pack up and get on the road. It was nice and quiet over night.
We had a leisurely breakfast and then did the walk to the top of the falls. There are three plunge pools at the top and people are swimming. There are no salt water crocodiles up the top and the water is beautiful and clear.
We walked around the rocks for a while and then decided to walk upstream. It was beautiful. The weather was lovely too. We climbed over rocks, walked over sand and walked through grass.
We checked out rock pools and took photos of plants. There were tiny orchids, a bright orange grevillea, water lilies and some gum trees were flowering. We walked for about an hour, until I twisted my ankle and fell over. I saved my camera but skin my shin and landed hard on my wrist. I checked myself out and didn't do any serious damage.
We decided to head back for a late lunch. We got back to the plunge pools and there were a lot more people swimming. It really was beautiful.
We got back down without any problems, passing a family with three children, aged about 7, 4 and 2. The 2 year old was so cute, we tried to talk to her but she was focused on climbing and catching up with her siblings. She was doing an amazing job.
We had a late lunch and had an afternoon of rest. My wrist got really sore so I bandaged it and took some pain killers.
Later in the afternoon we went on the billabong/south alligator walk (2.5 km return). I stood up and my ankle was very sore. It improved as we walked. We saw som black cockatoos fly overhead and some sort of rosella in a gum tree.
The walk was OK. I expected to see a lot of birds come in at sunset but they didn't.
We cooked tea and watched the full moon rise over the mountain.
