This morning we went to the Women's Associations shop and sanded it down before giving it 3 coats of paint! We showered before lunch and then had a rest before meeting Abdou at 3pm to go meet the women. We split into 4 groups and went of with different women to their homes. There we were able to see their daily lives all having different experiences.
Eve, Nikki & Jen - we walked with 2 young girls to a village on the far side of the valley. After being introduced to Mum & Grandma we were taken to the kitchen & given crates to sit on. We then helped to prepare some vegetables for the evening meal of stewed meat & couscous. One of the girls was kneading the dough for bread & we then helped shape flat round loaves which would later be cooked in a pizza style oven later. Next we helped prepare the couscous firstly mixing the dry grains with water & oil before steaming it over the stew, once it was cooked we fluffed it further with oil, this makes couscous a lot lighter & more moist than at home! Next we went outside to bake the bread. The girls fetched some grass to feed the cow before the eldest began milking it. Mum took us into the pen & helped us each take a turn milking the cow. After we were taken into the shed to feed the calf. Finally we helped bake the last few loaves before being given mint tea & some bread to try with home churned butter, jam & chocolate spread.
Alice, Ellen, Eleanor, Holly, Rhona & Sarah - We had a really long walk (40 mins) then our tea crawl began. We then went to get grass and walnuts for the cow. We cut the walnuts and ate them. We went to the next door house and watched them cook. Taught them how to take photos and saw some really cute kittens. We put wood in the fire and Ellen nearly got ran over by a mule. We watched Top Gear and had more tea! (2 glasses each) Then we walked back and I (Alice ) slipped and got my hand held all the way down. We had a fantastic time!!!
Hayley & Vanessa - Fortunately, the house that we visited was only five minutes away up a hill, however the women were concerned that we were tired. We fetched some bottles and headed down to a stream to fill them. Hayley had a "spectacular" fall down a "massive cliff" covered in "loose, slippery boulders". We helped to carry them back up the hill to the house and then sat in a room with a TV, pretending to know what the program was about! We prepared green beans and potatoes before heading to the kitchen where we prepared food for the cows and Vanessa fell in love with an adorable kitten. Hayley washed up and Vanessa brushed a little girl's hair, apparently very badly as she got her mother to redo it! We headed down to the basement where there were two cows. Vanessa attempted to milk one whilst Hayley and the woman looked on and laughed. We drank plenty of tea and were given soup which we guessed was made from barley and milk with dates. We then headed back to the hotel. It was really interesting and fun!!!
