We had an early wake up call this morning at about 4:30am, and not from any of the staff at EcoAmazonia, but from the wild Howler monkeys and macaws that were screaming outside our huts. Pretty wicked way to wake up I reckon!
We had to be up at 6 to get back on the canoe and back to Puerto Maldonado. After an hour and a half on the canoe we reached our destination and got to the airport in one piece. It was funny, when the plane arrived, the staff pretty much opened the doors onto the tarmac and let us onto the plane - no safety checks needed! How easy flying would be if all the airports were this relaxed. The flight was only half an hour or so, and we instantly noticed the high altitude back in Cusco. It was nice to be away from the mozzies though!
This was our last day in this amazing city, so I made the most of it by shopping at the San Pedro markets again and visiting the famous chocolate museum. Unfortunately the chocolate making classes were all full so I settled for a special hot chocolate with cinnamon and cloves in it, and sat on the balcony overlooking the square. Yum. This definitely is a city on my list to return to, surprisingly I loved it way more than the capital, Lima.
It was a lady on the tour's last night so we celebrated by going out for dinner in the main square to Inka Grill restaurant. It was so delicious and after a fair few maracuya sours (the traditional Pisco sour with passionfruit) we headed to Team Inka - a salsa club. When we arrived we were immediately escorted to the dance floor where they started teaching us some basic salsa steps. Then we got paired up with a man who threw us around the floor. Of course I got the shortest, slimiest man in the room who kept sniffing me. Aside from that it was really fun, though I can't see myself making a career out of it any time soon! The Latin American music is really infectious so even if you're completely hopeless at dancing (which I am) it's hard to stand still.
By about 11 we were all knackered and headed back to the hostel to hit the sack. Our time in Peru is coming to an end, with a 7 hour bus ride ahead tomorrow to get to Puno.
