Amanda woke us up in time to see the sunrise over the salt flats, and even though it was unbelievably cold, it was totally worth it. The small lake created an awesome mirror effect of the volcano and surrounding hills, and even better, the flamingos who were still sleeping on one leg in the middle of the lake. Now most people would just leave well enough alone, but not us. We chased the flamingos so they'd fly off and we could appreciate how cool they looked when they flew. Poor b*****s.
Chef Stalin made us pancakes for breaky which were so tasty, so none of us left a scrap on our plates. We then headed out to explore more of the salt flats, complete with a puppy we found wandering around the hostel. No matter how long I spent staring at the salt flats, I never lost my sense of complete awe for this place, it was really mind blowing! We took a few more silly photos and then piled back into the jeep to explore another salt hotel. You can't stay at this hotel anymore but it was pretty impressive - everything inside was made of salt, even the huge statues.
Our driver then took us to see 'the eyes on the salt flats' which were 30cm diameter holes in the flats and water was flowing underneath. He dug into one of the eyes in -15 degree water (it doesn't freeze because of all the salt) to bring out some beautiful salt crystals that had formed in the water.
After that we headed back to Uyuni to see an old train cemetery just out of town. These coal trains were shipped over from England 25 years ago to transport coal from Chile to Bolivia. They were only in use for 2 years then they were abandoned just off the tracks in Uyuni. It made for some pretty spectacular photos though, and the graffiti all over the trains actually looked really cool.
We then headed back to the hostel to meet up with the other group for one last hoorah at the only bar in town - The Extreme Fun Pub! Amanda insisted she buy us the first drink as a surprise, it was called a "sexy llama b****". Without going into too much detail, this horrendous cocktail was a terracotta mug in the shape of a naked women with her legs open, and you had to drink out of her nether region. Eeeew. We had a few more of these terrible cocktails, each with their own hilarious/cringe worthy mug and then headed home for a 12am curfew set by the hostel - they had had enough of people playing the drinking games at the Extreme Fun pub and coming back to the hostel and vomiting everywhere. A really fun night though and I'm going to be really sad to say goodbye to the people in the other group
