This weekend we headed out to a small town called Tepoztlan. We headed out from the south terminal which was a lot grottier than the North!
Tepoztlan is a rare gem and highly recomended for anyone touring mexico. It is in the valley of 3 great mountains made famous by a high dwelling prehispanic indian tribe called Mexicas. The town itself is what the americans call a "2 street town" ie. very small with just one main road with market stalls and street vendors. As you can see from the pics the streets are all the old cobble style I am realising is a hallmark of mexicana road building!
As you would expect the people here are very poor but very hospitibale. Their main source of income is tourism brought to them by the highlight of the place. A Mexicas temple pyramid built atop one of the mountains.
We stopped at a bed and breakfeast and dropped the bags and headed straight for the mountain stopping for a light lunch. Ira decided to have a beer which I was sure would slow her ascent! (no coment as she is sitting next to me reading as I write.......ouch!)
It is a pretty hardcore climb but feeling (and looking from the pics) very fat I was keen for a bit of excercise. We made it up in just over an hour (normal time is 2-3). At the top we found a troop of some monkey/badger hybrid whose name I forget now. Will need to look that up again!
The climb down was almost as hard for me as the climb up being unaturally swelled by good food my legs had to work very hard to stop me from rolling down the mountain courtesy of gravity. Ira on the other hand pranced from rock to rock like a deer!
We had another beer then back to the hotel to check out what has to surely be the worlds coldest swimming pool! Check out the cool karate kid pose I did there! In the evening nice meal out at Los Colorines then to bed in the hope of sleep. Sleep that Ira found very easily however I struggled - in part due to the 2 churches ringing their bells every 15 mins from 4 am. Joined then by the loudest fireworks know to man. Well this is mexico - it would be complete without a chorus of Dogs and roosters! YEY! Apparently they do this every weekend!
Sunday was a bit more of a mong day. We started with a dip in the pool. Ira jumped the bullet but I was a bit more cautious. Rightly so. Still ice cold! After we headed into town to check out the market! Nice lunch and then tried the other delicacy Tepotzlan is known for - Massages! Such an odd town really. Mexicas temple and 50% stores bohemia!
The massage was great - however they used some oil, incense or candle that really stoned both of us. Was walking around town after in a kind of trance that only 4 beers could shake! Sunday night I wasnt taking any chances and took half a sleeping pill! Glad I did too as aparently sunday the towns dogs had some major rukus (which I suspect has something to do with refried beans!)
Monday back to MC and trying to shake a cold!
More soon!
