Our last day in San Francisco, we haven't had that long here, but it was been amazing, and I really look forward to retuning! We have a night bus to Los Angeles tonight, but we still have a full day in San Fran. The weather wasn't as good today, very cold, wet and grey. We had to get up early to check out and also because we have booked to do the Alcatraz tour. It took a little while to flag down a taxi but we made it to the pier in loads of time. It was so grey you couldn't even see the Golden Gate Bridge.
I learnt a lot from the trip to Alcatraz and loved every minute, it started with a short film, giving you loads of information about the island and what it has been used for in the past. It was once a military island and more famously known as the jail, but it was also occupied by Indians at one point that where fighting for their rights. The jail in fact was closed down on 1972 (if I remember correctly!) You are given an audio tour listening device to walk around with! This is the second jail we have visited, but don't fancy sleeping in this one. It was about midday when the sun started to show, breaking through the clouds. It gave us the opportunity to see the Golden Gate Bridge from the island.
The boat journey was only 20 minutes and once we had done everything on this island we heads back to the mainland. We had talked about hiring bikes - but as we had been on and over the Golden Gate Bridge the day before we decided to head to Chinatown. We found a nice restaurant, and were about to sit on the first floor balcony, looking down on Chinatown. The sun was now burning us as we sat outside. The food was amazing, think we might have ordered a little to much, but we did eat it all. It was just really nice to sit outside.
We still had some time, so we headed to the Golden Gate Bridge park it was only a bus journey away and we on walked around half of it before it got dark. The first part of the park was known as hilly hill also known as "smoke a lot of weed hill" kids were playing football near by, breathing in the fumes of the weed! Lol. We were offered some at one point and kindly declined and walked swiftly on! The park was really big, we could have done with longer. We found a few lakes and museums - just didn't get as far as the bison that we wanted to see.
It was dark by the time we headed back to the hostel, grabbed a bite to eat before heading to the greyhound stop. Oh how we look forward to riding the greyhound night buses. There is a massive amount of homeless people in San Francisco, you are badgered on every corner. We were in the stations loads of time before our bus departed. Finally arriving in LA means we should get some great weather, it is going to be nice to chill on the beach!
