River Valley, Wellington , Kaiteriteri, Westport, Lake Mahinapua & Franz Josef
Westland District, New Zealand
River Valley - Our journey there consisted of windy roads and our bus driver, Bods told us that we would staying in the middle of nowhere - 40km from civilisation. But the positive side of this was that we were told we would be having roast chicken and all the trimmings for dinner. As we signed up for accomodation we noticed that we would be staying in a 32 bed dorm - it was the cheapest option so we went for it! When we arrived we dumped our bags and went down to the river for a swim and to jump off some cliffs. 7pm came and food was on the table! It was so delicious. We had a chilled evening playing cards and drinking wine. Later on we headed up to bed to try and get some sleep in amongst 16 people on our side of the room... we found out who the snorers were!
Wellington - Arrvied in Wellington quite late, so we decided to go for a walk around the city. We went down to the harbour where we noticed lots of couples, then we realised it was Valentine's Day! We got back to our room and had an early night. After stress of having to find another hostel as our one was fully booked, we went to the Te Papa Museum and experienced high ride stimulator which was fun. That evening we went down to the hostel bar for some drinks and to say goodbye to some of the people from our bus. The next day we took the ferry across to the South Island which was a long 3 hours as we had to sleep on the floor. We arrived in Picton and hopped onto our next Kiwi bus with a whole load of new people.
Kaiteriteri - We travelled down from Picton arriving around lunchtime. It had the most beautiful beach and we decided that the next morning we would be out sunbathing. Georgia's old p.e teacher, Pogo lives 40 minutes from Kaiteriteri and came and met us on the beach. It was great to see her and catch up. She then invited us to her house for roast chicken, it was so nice of her and we were so grateful.
Westport - Arriving into Westport we weren't expecting much as Pogo had filled us in on what it was like. Again we dumped our bags, got dressed into nicer clothes and the kiwi bus took us down to the beach where everyone sat round a massive bonfire and got to know each other. It was a really fun evening.
Lake Mahinapua - We had been told about this famous 'Poo' pub where we would have a set theme to dress up, our theme was bad taste which everyone took differently and it got a bit insulting and out of hand. Us 4 girls and our two friends went as Jimmy Saville's Victims, not very nice but extremely mild compared to everyone else's costumes! We had a steak dinner which was delicious and huge! Everyone got involved and with the jukebox playing it turned into a really good night with us getting into bed at 3am.
Franz Josef - Another early start and we headed down the west coast with our first stop being at a very rugged but well known cafe and museum all about the history of the western coast of New Zealand. After seeing a albino possum and a short film about hunting we treated ourselves to a yummy full cooked breakfast. Back on the bus an hour later we arrived in Franz Josef. Our hostel is one of the nicest and has a 20 seater hot tub! We got into bed early all shattered from the last few nights. Olive and Sophie woke up early to go and do a Ice Explorer Glacier Walk, on the fastest moving glacier in the world! Tonight we are heading down to the bar after our cheap and nasty supper. Speak soon!
