em & ck : THE BIG TRIP!!
We got the greyhound up to Whistler which took about 3 hours, and consisted of mountains, trees and lakes all around. Emma took millions of pictures of the mountains, then realised after looking through them on her camera that they all looked the same! We got dropped off at Whistler Village where Kathleen came to pick us up ad take us back to their beautiful house. Whistler is a really beautiful area, and the view from their balcony was incredible. They can see mountains all around, a lake and a beaver lodge! We also met Corky the adorable dog! Eric then dropped us back into Whistler Village and we had a look around in the boiling hot weather with snowboarders in all their gear. The number of people we saw with "stubble" tans from their goggles was insane! The bus system was really useful and we used it to get back to the house and then went for a walk with Corky before the barbeque. This was when we saw beavers really really close! It was a very cool experience to see them and the lodge they lived in.
The next day we had breakfast and tea on the balcony overlooking the mountains and then headed off to follow the Valley Trail from their house to Whistler Village...a task which should have been...relatively straightforward. Having left the house in the BOILING hot weather we found the trail and began to walk, however as we approached Whistler Creek we realised we were walking in the wrong direction, so we did an about turn the followed the trail in the correct direction! The trail led us past some vast beautiful lakes, up some steep hills, around golfcourses and through parks into the village. We headed over to the Gondola to catch a ride up the mountain, only to be told upon arrival that the lifts had just closed, we failed to notice the stationary gondolas as we walked up to it... So scrapping that idea we headed to the grocery store to get some food for dinner, prawns, chicken and veggies in tortilla wraps. We then headed back home to cook (heat up) our food! We relaxed watching TV and Em had the task of injecting the cat, Cluney, for her diabetes! Clare was there for "moral support"!
We awoke to an empty house as Eric and Kathleen had gone to Vancouver, Em fed and injected Cluney again, grabbed some breakfast and headed straight to the gondolas to ensure that we actually got up the mountain that day! The gondola lasted around 20 minutes and we had a pod to ourselves, the scenery was amazing and by the time we reached the top we were completely surrounded by snow. Em and I were about to get off at one point up the mountain only to be told that this was only a 1/3 of the way up!! Whoops! At over 6000 feet it was weird that is wasn't cold, but it was really bright!! (whilst typing this we just heard some screeching breaks and a crash outside! - The drama never stops when we're around!) We saw loads of people skiing and boarding and walked around for a bit, then we caught the gondola back down. We went to a restaurant in the village and finally got to ry Poutine - fries with gravy and cheese curd! Suprisingly nice - athough looks nasty! We got the bus back to the house, where we had an evening of screaming and lots of courage when we had to deal with multiple spiders, mosquitos and giant ants. The part that grossed us out and has scarred us was when Em stepped on an ant and actually heard a POP...gross beyond words! That night Em contemplated sleeping in my bed and not on the floor!
The next day we awoke early to make sure we had everything packed and ready for the journey back to Vancouver, grabbed some breakfast and took some pictures and went to the village to grab our bus just in time! Everyone is so laid back about (aboot) everything!
We then had two bus drivers both equally annoying. The first one stopped the bus and told me to turn my headphones down...Em couldn't understand why because she couldn't hear my music and she was next to me! But being the polite British girl I turned it down a little bit and we carried on. A while later the woman stopped the bus again, much to the annoyance of some passengers who had appointments to get to, to walk through the bus, which is when I insisted it wasn't my music it was some dude behind me. After the bus journey when collecting our bags the woman apologised...to which I gave her a look and replied "yeah, good!" The next bus driver was unable to smoothly put his foot on the accelerator and so the journey was constantly jerky the whole way!
We got on the ferry and walked around, then made our way back to the bus, and then arriving in Vancouver Island we drove to the bus depot where John came to pick us up!
