em & ck : THE BIG TRIP!!
We decided to celebrate our last night in Montreal by going to a screening of students movies at concordia university. We met up with Nicole and friends and squashed ourselves into Daves small two door sports car to drive to drive to St Laurent for the after party. Unfortunately em spent the journey squished on clares lap cutting off the blood supply to her legs whilst almost breaking her neck against the roof of the car! Before going into the club nicoles friend sarah decided she needed some food so we stopped at "schwartz's" for some montreal smoked meat, french fries and one...huge...green...pickle on a plate?! After satisfying our hunger we headed across the road for the party and sarah managed to fall UP the stairs before even touching any alcohol! Em managed to attract the attention of a lone brazilian guy and after the third time of singling her out nicole decided it was about time she stepped in. The evening was spent drinking, playing pool and foosball...note to self...dont bother playing pool when you've had a few! Nicole managed to vanish so thankfully we caught a taxi home with her friends who spent the journey trying to impersonate our english accent...failing miserably..."blimey govn'r"!!
After getting in at 3 in the morning we left a note telling carol NOT to wake us up in time for 9 o'clock bus but instead to let us sleep and get the 11 o'clock bus. However she failed to read this note and so we were awoken at 7am!!! We caught the 11 o'clock bus from montreal and arrived in toronto just after 6pm. We checked into our hostel where we could see the CN Tower from our window!! Then we headed out to find some food and after an hour of searching we came across "shoeless joe's" only to find it was just across the street from our hostel!! On returning to our quad dorm we were greeted with 'Vasso', a large greek canadian woman with very strong opinions! We spent the remainder of the evening learning far too much about greek culture and greek dancing!! Mistaking our facial expressions for interest in the subject, she proceeded to show us an insanely long home video DVD of her greek dance group in Prague. Having travelled all day, we were getting tired yet there were pictures to be shown. Eventually we diplomatically managed to get her to shut up so we could get some sleep!
The next day we decided to go on a self guided tour of toronto visiting the hockey hall of fame, the royal ontario museum and yorkville. We stopped off in queens park for a picnic made up of left over food from the bus journey. Clare had issues cutting the cheese, producing triangular chunks as opposed to slices! She claims it was the knife hmm!
On saturday morning we were met by em's cousin mark and we headed off to the sky dome to watch a baseball game...the toronto blue jays vs los angeles angels. We each had to get a hotdog and spent the entire game looking for the 'slush puppy guy'. When he eventually came down our aisle, em threw herself over the chair infront and ran down the steps trying to get his attention!Even though mark explained the rules of baseball to us we still had no idea what was going on! In the evening we took a trip up the CN Tower in time for sunset.
Then it was on to NIAGARA!!! WOOO!! We booked a cheap day trip with Moose Tours, and trust us to get the newbie!? But he was sweet and didn't get us lost! When we arrived we had an hour to look around at the falls and grab some food (we brought our pittas and cheese!) We walked along looking at the amazing falls and naively walked into the "very light spray" only to walk out the other end 2 seconds later completely drenched! Thankfully we weren't the only ones. We then went on the famous Maid Of The Mist tour, and were given very fetching blue ponchos with hoods that tied lke bonnets, ours were more like dresses! It's the fashion don't ya know! We got on the boat and went straight to the front wearing our flip flops, rolled up trousers and dresses (thanks for the tip Carol) where we were taken straight to the bottom of the falls. It was incredible to see that much rushing water...kinda made us need the toilet, Em got soaked the most due to Clare being completely covered attempting to film through her poncho....her blue poncho. The boat headed back to dry land where we dried off in the hot sun and headed off to a winery for some wine tasting...losing a canadian member of the group...he's still lost. We got to taste the red and white wine and got told about ice wine - all very interesting, we also got shown how to properly taste wine...we got to swill, sniff, swill again, take sip and then do the very difficult task of sucking air into your mouth with the wine still in it. We still need to perfect this task, dribbling did occur.
After this we were taken to Brock's Monument, where we got fantastic views and could even see all the way to Toronto! Then onto the Whirlpool, where the river takes a 90 degree turn, it was impressive but a bit of an anti climax as we were expecting a huge bathtub plug effect! After that we went back to the falls to see them lit up at night! All in all a very good day for only $50!
The next day we caught a ferry from mainland Toronto to Toronto island. We arrived at Centre Island after 15 mins of being attacked by balls of flies...ew! We walked around the island, over bridges and to the beach then stopped for a picnic. Whislt eating our lunch we saw two japanese businessmen, suits and all, passing by on what looked like a golf buggy with pedals...this gave us an idea! Moments later we hired a 2 seater quadricycle and were happily pedaling along the paths to explore the island. Lets just say god help us when Em starts driving...
Cycling around the island we soon became tired, afterall we were carrying 2 people and a hunk of metal, the idea of pushing became more appealing. After our hour was up, and going into a place they told us not to, we returned our vehicle to its rightful owner and returned to the ferry dock in search for some ice cream. We failed to find any, however did make a dash for the swings....where we were attacked by balls of flies AGAIN...and digested some too!
We got back to our hostel where we packed and went to Shoeless Joes for dinner where our very enthusiastic waitress Heather taught us how to say Quasedillas!! We returned to the hostel for our insanely early rise.
Us xx
