Had the worst night sleep ever last night. We didn't get to bed till just before midnight and then I had to set the alarm for 5.45am...not pleasant. I was up coughing all night and kept mum awake too and also one of my eyes now has conjunctivitis or something similar which I've never had before in my life. Felt like the walking dead this morning. We had a 7am train to Madrid, just a 3hr trip. Dozed on and off the whole way. Luckily our hotel room was ready which was a surprise.
After getting organised, first stop was a pharmacy to pick up more stuff for me...usually it is mum who is the walking pharmacy.
Went to Mercado San Miguel which we had been told about by a friend at the wedding. It is a market full of tapas bars and drink bars. You just go around and pick and pay for what you want and then sit down and eat. So much to choose from. So glad we were told about it. Since the tables are communal, we ended up chatting to a couple of guys from Canada. One of them doesn't do tapas, he got a pizza instead!!
Next stop was the Royal Palace. We had been told it was free the last 2hrs of the day but it got pretty busy. We decided to pay instead. Rooms are amazing. Royal family don't live here, just use it for formal occasions. You wonder if they ever wander through and go "this is just ridiculous". They also had a special art exhibition on which had some lovely art on display but at this stage I was ready to close my eyes and go to sleep.
Not really hungry, but mum wanted a light bite so we headed back to the market and got a couple of small tapas before heading to Chocolateria de San Chines famous for their churros and hot chocolate. Have been looking forward this to the whole time in Spain and it did not disappoint. So good.
Love the old buildings in Madrid. Just looking around there is photo opportunities everywhere. I bought my DSLR camera this trip but have not used it much just due to the heat and having to carry it around. The smaller camera has done a good job as has my mobile phone. One day we won't need cameras.
So an early night back in the hotel, hopefully sleep better tonight. Last day in Spain tomorrow. See how much we can fit in!
