Last day in Madrid today. Mum wanted me to get to a doctor as again it was a poor nights sleep but I didn't want to waste our last day here. As it was, we didn't get out of the hotel until after 11am. We decided to do the Hop on Hop off bus so at least mum would get to see a few of the many beautiful buildings in Madrid. You just never know where to look as there is just history everywhere. Lots of restoration work going on too. The only stop we got off was at Retiro Park to see the Monument to Alfonso XII which is a monument built around a man made lake where lots of people hire row boats. The park is also home to the Crystal Palace and although it is beautiful, the glass was so dirty, it detracted from the visit today. Bit of a shame. The rest of the gardens are beautiful and it was nice walking in the shade of the trees.
Back on board we did the whole circuit before getting on and returning to the room so mum could have a quick shower and we could check out (had arranged a late checkout of 3pm). We then walked up to Puerto del Sol which has a cute statue of a bear stretching up to a tree (can't remember the significance of it). We then jumped on the 2nd route which is a bit more boring and goes past the Real Madrid stadium and some residential areas. At least mum can say she has seen Madrid to a degree.
We then went to Plaza St Ana for a nice last sit down lunch of what else but Tapas and Sangria. What a large jug. Over 1ltr we believe. Managed to get through it just but definitely noticed it. Food was lovely and was a good farewell meal to Spain. We were going to try and fit in some Churros but stomachs were too full and we were running out of time as we were being picked up at 7pm by our chauffer (very fancy I know).
Back to the hotel and the driver was early, luckily we were just about ready to go. Nice quick drive to the airport, checked in and went to the lounge which had a lot to desire. It wasn't an Emirates lounge but one they used here. Most of the food here is pre-packaged, lucky we weren't hungry and the staff are the most miserable we've encounted so far. Lucky it wasn't our first stop or otherwise we would have a bad first impression of Spain. Time for Dubai now!!
