So today was the day we needed to disembark from the cruise. Could have easily stayed a few more days. We got into Juneau about 6.30am and of course it was raining. Slight issue with the ship docking, someone was in our spot so it delayed things a bit this morning but we got off around 9am after one last breakfast.
Our bags were taken across to the hall where we had met last week and we picked them up and brought them to the hotel. Unfortunately a room wasn't ready that early, so we left them in storage and headed downtown to get the shuttle out to the glacier that we never did last weekend. It was about a 20min drive to the glacier and the driver made it very entertaining, pointing out interesting and no so interesting places along the way. We saw so many Bald Headed Eagles sitting on street lights and along the water edge waiting for some easy food as the tide went down. Couldn't believe the number of them.
At the glacier, you can take a small hike to Nuggets Fall which we did. Took our time and took note of our surroundings as we walked. Saw the cutest little squirrel munching on a mushroom. Beautiful wildflowers and so much greenery. Reached the waterfall and boy, did it have some power behind it. Unfortunately we couldn't walk to the base of it as water was over the path and neither mum or I wanted to risk picking our way across on the rocks that others were doing.
Unsure how we would feel about this glacier after seeing so many beautiful ones this past week but glad we went. Beautiful in it's own way. Really enjoyed the surrounds and you could get an idea of how much it has receded over the past 50 years.
Back to town and we sat down to a feast of King Crab for lunch. Chose the combo which was one King Crab Leg, 4 Crab Cakes & Crab Bisque. We also got another leg so we had one each. The crab just came out of the shell so easily. So good, we ordered another combo to share. No need for dinner.
Wandered the tourist shops, of which there are many. Lots are owned by the cruise companies and come the end of the season they will shut down till next summer. We tried to stick to those that were locally own before heading back to the hotel to check in and sort out our bags. Off to Anchorage tomorrow and then next day is Brooks Lodge and we can't wait to see the bears.
