Last day of full day cruising today, but woke up to the most incredible sunshine. Sunglasses were a definite requirement as the glare of the water and the glacier in front of us was so strong. I actually woke quite early so headed down for a cup of tea at 6am to enjoy the peace and quiet and take a few photos. A staff member was cleaning some of the windows and she informed me the glacier in front of us was called SumDum Glacier. SumDum because that is the sound (in a really deep voice) the glacier makes when it calves. So if someone asks you what that glacier is called, you can say "Some dumb glacier".
We pulled up anchor while having breakfast and headed down the Tracy Arm towards the Sawyer Glacier. This is where we started to see large pieces of ice floating by. This all used to be ice one day and that is why the the rock faces on either side are so steep. Incredible how nature can work. The call came out that there a humpback near one of the rock walls but he wasn't as playful as our whales last night. Then the call we really wanted to hear came....bears!!! Out came the binoculars and there on the rocky shore near a waterfall, there was a mama bear and her 2 cubs..black bears this time. So amazing. Got to spend about 15mins watching them. It was interesting to see them scramble up the rocks. I honestly didn't think we would see any bears down here as thought the environment would be too harsh but obviously not.
The scenery was spectacular, lots of waterfalls down the cliffs surrounding us, pieces of ice floating by, in different shapes and one even had a seal hanging out on it. Kept sailing and we soon came across the South Sawyer Glacier and then around the corner we slowed down. Too deep here to anchor so it was skiff tours only.
When it was our turn, off we went to the face of the Sawyer Glacier. Once upon a time, these two glaciers were joined. This glacier had the deepest blue colours in it - the deeper the blue the denser the ice is. Our guide got a piece of ice out of the water and passed it around so we could kiss it and also had a thermos of Hot Chocolate and Peppermint Schnapps to share to keep the cold at bay. Was a lovely 2 hours spent just enjoying our last afternoon on this cruise. Wish it was a couple of days more but good things must always come to an end.
Back on board, stripped down all the layers and put on the swimsuit to enjoy the hot tub one last time before packing my bag. Downstairs for a glass of Sangria and chatting with some of the new friends we have made this past week.
