Day 5
After a day off in Brennin we are on the road again. Mary's trailer is repaired and we are good to go. With hopes of making up for lost time we set out early, also with hopes to get most of the riding done before the mid afternoon heat. We did make up for lost time but in making the decision to push ahead a bit further we did find ourselves riding in the midday sun. It must have been at least 90 degrees if not hotter. But the roads were good, the terrain was simply rolling hills and we were feeling rested - all factors that mitigated the heat somewhat.
We stopped for a mid morning coffee in Hoodsport and then rode on until the turnoff to Mcleary, where we stopped for lunch at the Kamilche Trading Post.
Then on to Mcleary with plans to end the day at Elma. But once we got to Elma we realized that it was only another 16 miles to Montesano our scheduled stop for Day 4. If we made it there we would only be 1 day behind, easy enough to catch up after that. So despite the heat and tiredness we decided to go the distance - all the way to Montesano. Our longest day yet- 77 miles!
Needless to say we were "bagged" when we arrived. I was in no mood to start searching for the campground so made the choice to take a motel for the night. I believe a good choice and well earned for both of us. I am now comfortably lounging on the bed writing, soon to be sound asleep.
No sooner did I write that last sentence when a train whistle blasted through the peacefulness! We realized that the tracks run right next to the motel which is now vibrating as the longest train ever passes by. I just not too many run at night. But I am tired enough to sleep through anything!
Tomorrow we head for Bay Center and then into Oregon.
