So after 4 days boating down the Amazon we reached Santerem, and after an hour bus ride (we had some fun trying to fit about 10 of us with bags and all on to an already busy local bus, but the locals helped and put some of our bags on there laps, very friendly!) we reached Alter de Chao, which is literally stunning. Our hostel was 1 min walk to the beach, palm trees everywhere, mountains in the background... Beautiful! We swam over to a small island, a few took a boat with our belongings but swimming was the more fun option! We sat and had a few ice cold beers and watched the sun set, we had been waiting for a decent sunset and this was it, sat on an island in the middle of the Amazon. We swam back before dark and went for a big meal, which we needed after the somewhat suspect meals on the boat... I had a mixed grill, with Tongue included... I only ate half of that though! At least I tried it, it would have been ok if it wasn't still in the exact shape of a tongue!! Anywaaaay, the chicken, beef and sausage were delicious.
We all agreed that we could easily stay for a week here, but as the speed boat we needed to catch was leaving the next day we only had one night, at least we experienced it. Easily one of my top places so far..
5am wake up next day to catch a bus back to Santerem for the speed boat, unfortunately it was tipping it down and we didn't know for sure where the bus stop was. So, picture 10 backpackers all loaded up walking the streets of this quiet little town in the early hours, in the rain.. must have been a sight for anyone crazy enough to be up and about! We started to think we were going to miss the boat, but then, from around the corner we see the rickety old bus... probably the only time I had been glad and eager to get on a bus!
We made the boat in good time, it always works out in the end...
