Hello once again!
We are currently in Nungwi, Zanzibar and loving it! Got here yesterday as you prob all know, and then stayed last night in Stone Town, went for an awesome drink at a bar right on the beach, have some good photo's of it, and then went to a traditional Swahilli restaurant and sat on the floor and ate not bad food, although after dinner it didn't exactly agree if us .. if you know what I mean?!!! Went on a spice plantation tour this mornng and tasted all sorts of wicked spices, dug right out of the ground that we tasted, was pretty cool. Also went and seen the places where slaves were 'kept' and traded and sold etc., was very very very sad and terrible place to see. Glad I've been there, but made me feel sick in the astomach hearing some of the stories, just so hard to believe people would treat other people like that!
Anyway, also seen this amazing palace that was burnt down, and the dude that owned it had 14 wives, and 'Pleasure pool', no doubt the boys on the tour thought it was a pretty awesome place! Had some amazing fresh fruit for lunch, the best pineapple in the world and some not bad other stuff as well. Then a guy showed us how to climb a coconut tree ... and Fluke thought it looked pretty easy, so he had a dip at it - did very well as well, much better than the masai mara warrior jumping episode. Settled in here for the next few days and on Sat we head back to stone town where we should be able to upload our photo's, finally, for you all to see!
Was great reading all of your updates, and makes me miss home so much, and no had no idea it was a sale/maff grand final?!!! Bit exciting ... my boots are going awesome, love them - although got a bit wet in the first week have bounced back and are doing me just dandy, ebay bargain hunter I am!
It's really weird because it's the month of ramadan here in Africa, and Zanzibar has a 98% muslim rate, so lots of people practising ramadan at the moment, which basically means you fast from 4.30am, until sunset - no food, drinks or snacks (at least the 40 hour famine lets you have tea and barley sugar!!). Anyway, this very inconvenitently means that we can't buy food or drinks during the day cos the shops are all shut, and that we can't really drink ours in public because it makes the hungry locals a bit growly at us ... interesting - also I've had to buy a scarf because of the high muslim population whenever we go out in public we must be covered up as well, so if I'm looking a little bohemien in some pics, it may explain it!!! he he. Another thing to note, I had absolutley no idea how much of a literary masterpiece and factually correct movie the lion king actually is - if you want to know any swahilli Kirty before your trip - watch it!!!! Simba, means lion, rafiki - the baboon that christens simba, means friend. Asanti Sana means thank-you very much ... (this is the bit at the start of the song that Rafiki sings when he finds Simba ... Asanti Sana squashed banana ... la la la, etc.) They call wart hogs pumba's, and lions mufasa's, but I think that's just for our enjoyment!!!
Anyway, must put my shoulder scarf back on and return to our huts as ramadan is about to end for the day and it's not the best idea to get in the way of starved muslims when they are 15 minutes away from getting their only meal for the day ... I know you're floating back to new years eve a couple years ago zinks, and yes ... it's just like that!!! he he
Love to everyone, and Johnno, I think you've made Fluke miss home even more now ... he sends his love, to his bike!!!
Love Fluke and Spud xxxx
