Well we woke up to another great day – had a good sleep and left the boat early after saying goodbye to everyone – its surprising how well you get to know everyone even after such a short time. We went to the Charles Darwin Station on Santa Cruz Island where they have the giant tortoise and land iguana breeding programs.
We saw some of the baby tortoises and also Lonesome George. He is the last of his breed and doesn’t like to mate with any of the females they have in with him so they may look at cloning in the future. They think George has at least another 50-75yrs left in him so there is no hurry at the moment. We went into another enclosure with about six other giant tortoises – they were really cool and one had a swim while we were there.
It was cool to hang out there but all too soon we had to hit the road to travel across the island to the airport – this consisted of 4x4, ferry and bus before we got there. Flight back was uneventful and we had a final cruisey day in Quito visiting a local market and buying some souvenirs – Gerard got a poncho as apparently they don’t sell them in Peru and Bolivia and they are cheaper here in Ecuador anyway.
