This morning we went onto Floreana island and walked up to a Lava Tube – this is a hole/tunnel in the ground created by a lava flow towards the sea. It was pretty cool and pitch black when we got to the end of it – it got too small to follow it all the way to the end.
We then went to the post box on the island where you can post a postcard without a stamp. What happens is whenever you visit you look at all the post cards and if there is one from around your area you take it with you and deliver it in person if you can – if it is too far to deliver in person you are meant to buy a stamp when you get home and send it for the person who wrote it. There were none for NZ so we didn’t get to take any but we posted a couple – will be fun to see when and how they manage to get home – if at all. There were lots of USA and UK ones so people took them with them. Quite a cool idea.
We then went snorkeling off the beach around some rocks but visibility was pretty crappy so no one stayed in for long – we just hung out on the beach – in hindsight not such a good decision as majority of us got quite sun burnt!!! Later on we walked around to the other end of the beach and Kat was snorkeling with a sea turtle so Gerard went and got his gear and snorkeled with it for a while – he said it was amazing and staying so close to them for ages. We went back to the boat for lunch and motored to another part of the island for the afternoon.
We went snorkeling off the dinghies around an area called the Devils Crown. We all wore t-shirts this time to stop the sun burn!!! This was the best snorkeling that we got to do. It was amazing – there was so much to see – heaps and heaps of different fish, including this wicked big bright green and blue one and sea lions that played in the water with us – including one that came so close it touched you on the way past. Kat also saw a shark but I’m glad that I didn’t. This was so cool that we stayed in the water for about and hour and a half or longer – Awesome.
After we went back to the boat for a quick snack and change we then went back to Florena Island to look at some of the wild life. We saw lots of flamingos including some of their nests which look really weird – like big lumps on the beach. We then crossed to the other side of the island to a really beautiful beach. Here you could see turtle tracks up on the beach leading to lots of turtle nests. And out in the sea but really close to the land was lots of sea lions, a school of white tipped sharks, a school of golden rays, a little penguin, heaps of sally light foots, pelicans and frigate birds. Again so much to see – it was really amazing. I liked watching the sharks but Gerard liked the Pelican best as he kept doing flybys over the top of us.
Back at the boat we had another fantastic meal and then went to bed – we have learnt not to go to sleep until they start motoring for the night – wasn’t too rough but still pretty noisy!!!
