Day Three: "Rain, sun, rain, sun"Our first day of sightseeing and we accomplished quite a bit of ground, the subtitle of the day should be "Day One and Two sore bottom, Day Three sore feet" We started out at a local coffee shop for café latte and croissants. Then realized that I had dressed improperly so changed and off to get Karl and windbreaker. Then headed out for the Reichstag and on the way saw a few Peugeut cars in the window and had to stop and take a few pics for Matthais. Then we walked through the Brandenburg Gate and took a right to the Reichstag. The line to get in the Reichstag, given that it was raining, was too long and therefore we ran to the closest café and sat it out. Then from the Reichstag we walked through Tiergarten (gorgeous) to the Victory Tower and on the way happened across the Bellevue the flag was up which meant that the president was in. Continued on to the Victory Tower which we proceeded to climb the 1 million stairs to the top, really high up. I am thinking I may be developing a fear of heights as my first thought as we exited the graffiti ridden stairwell was "are there earthquakes in German?" The view was amazing and Karl reminded me that the tower had been moved by Hitler from the Reichstag to the current location and therefore could not have any cracks in it. As we left, burning calves and all, it started to rain again. Headed off to quench our thirst and then on to the wall, passing the finance ministry building. What is amazing about Karl is that before I have to read the signs stating the historical facts, he is telling me about the building and its significance. We continued on to the wall, which only about a blocks length remains. There is a temporary display as the architect/project is currently in dispute with the government - Chris?? From the wall onto Checkpoint Charlie where we happened to notice that the American in the picture at Checkpoint Charlie, I.e. the symbol of the men guarding the free West, was named Harper - Jason - took a photo for you. From Charlie we walked to the Chocolate factory, I mean it could not be all history. This store is called Fassbinder & Rausch, the largest chocolate store in all of Europe. In this store they had large scale model replicas of historic German buildings, and a working volcano (for Boo!) all made of chocolate. As Cindy tried to choose, Karl snapped two photos of the Frauenkirche and was abruptly halted by a stern Prussian floor manager who told him that he could not take pictures of any people in the store, Karl explained that the chocolate church was not a person. Scratching our heads we went on to look for treats for the boys. As Cindy was choosing some, she looked up to see Katie Holmes holding Suri Cruise standing right next to her asking Suri if she wanted this one? (apparently Tom is in town filming a movie) Cindy said to Karl "that is Katie Holmes" and then we understood why we could not take pictures of people in the store, it was a temporary rule. From there we walked back to the hotel but stopped on the way to take a picture of the worlds fastest production car, the Bugatti Veyron (for Matthais). That was a very productive, if wet, day and to top it off we had a Berlin version of Rolladen - called Rinderroulade & red cabbage with boiled potatoes. Don't worry Oma you still make the best, but this was close. Yum. Great day, great food. Enjoy the pics. We love and miss ya. Post note- could not get this up last night, sorry for the delay
