July 29, 2007Day One: summed up in two words - sore bottom. It is 8:10pm in California, which means we have been traveling for 10 hours. It is 10:10 Chicago time which means that people on the flight from the Windy City are winding down. I have no idea what time it is in Germany because although Karl has changed his watch already, he is sleeping and I cannot see his wrist. He was determined to sleep and he has been for, well frankly, most of the day. The day?. So farThe flight to Chicago was smooth, watched Blades of Glory (no way - Matthais, sorry) and we had the almost surreal experience of landing in one gate and checking the departure board only to find out the gate to Frankfurt was two gates away. Who goes to O'hare and does not have to run? Anyway, the restaurants were full but we managed to catch a meal at Wolfgang Pucks café and walk a bit and shot a few photos. We boarded the plane, by the way - I forgot how big the 747 is - and how small the leg room is, now I am wishing we spent the $100.00 to upgrade to the Economy Class. Note to self. Pretty much been reading on this flight as the movie was not appealing and I am ½ way through the Canon manual and have read all about Berlin. Then I checked out this new mag called Sactown, really like it. Learned a bunch of new things about the happenings in the city. Definitely need to check out the 2nd Saturday in Midtown - of course I have heard about it but - now I know what it is. Two things I wanted to pass on, first is there is apparently the best rated Hostel in all of America in Sacramento - who knew? It is in a Victorian built in the 1800s. Anyone stayed there? Also, Chris - the weekend you are coming to Sacramento is also the San Francisco Home Tour - check it out on the web. Even though I want to keep you in Sac, that may be something of interest to you. Well Sandra Bullock is on the screen and it is time to take a brain break. July 30, 2007Day Two: Not sure if it is day two or just a very long day one. Sleep Score - Karl=8+ hours, Cindy=1.5. I think I am typing right now. Anyway, we got to Frankfurt, felt victory when our bags came out of the baggage claim shoot. Went to the train station took a short local undergound to the Main Station in Frankfurt. The minute we came up the elevator, I had this sense of familiarity. Nothing like a train station, if you have ever waited for a train in Europe it is with you. Walked a bit and got the kinks out then off to the market. Karl was brave and got a fish sandwich, then some tummy medicine for me (strange how I had fruit for breakfast not a fish sandwich and I am the one who needs it?). Hung out, got to the right deck and realized we were in 2nd class. OK, I know I am a princess but right about now sleep is what I need and I was not sure I could do it staring across from some strange German person. I was wrong, snooze city with the rocking and swaying motion of the ICE. 5:30 on time, of course, because we are in Germany. Arrived in Berlin, found our way to a taxi with Karl saying - " do you know the address of the hotel?" C="no, we just tell them the name of the hotel, he is a taxi driver" Hate it when he is right, driver does not know where it is, stop the car, out of the car scramble to open the bags - can't. Ugh. Karl is sure I have forgotten the combo (flash forward - the lady at the United counter put the wrong name tags on the bag). I suggest to the cabi that he call, he does. Two minutes later we arrive at the Arcotel Velvet, we have arrived. Off to our first dinner. Thanks to all who covered our
