La Loire has been wonderful. We have so enjoyed staying in our lovely stone farmhouse. I even managed a bike ride down country lanes one evening whilst everyone else was chilling out in the garden. We have been busy discovering as much as possible during our little taste of the Loire. An Italian dinner of pizza in Chinon, visiting the limestone caves where mushrooms are grown, wine is kept and one cave where a man carved all the important building of the region - it took him 2 years of very detailed work - magnifique!
We decided the children would prefer to see a fortified castle rather than a chateau full of beautiful paintings and furniture so we visited chateau Breze. We had lots of fun exploring what is in fact two chateaux one built in the fifth century underground and the other built in the fifteenth on top. Fascinating to imagine the life of troglodytes in an embattled country and then to compare it with a life in a chateau above ground with beautiful furniture and amazing views of the countryside and vines. Of course, on the way home we had to visit a winery to try some local wines as well as go the butcher in monsireigne to buy sausages for our BBQ. On the way home we passed the nuclear power station again, quite unnerving to see and I can imagine it would have created quite a conflict with the local people to have such a monstrosity built in their beautiful backyard!
Our next adventure is Puy du Fou!
