Last night there was an incredible thunder storm but we were all way too tired to get up to see it and with all the wooden shutters closed it meant we slept through most of it. Unfortunately, we woke to rain and it is our one day we really needed sunshine.
With a 90 minute drive to Puy du Fou we were still hopeful the rain would pass but unfortunately not. Puy du Fou is a bit like a medieval Disneyland, much of it outdoors with performances of actors and animals telling stories about different historical events. It really is the most amazing place to visit and draws many spectators in spite of it's isolated location. The first performance, Le secret de la lance, was of a magical lance involving acrobatics on horses, sword fighting on castle ramparts, explosions and of course a happy ending. We were all enthralled in spite of the pouring rain. We all looked rather comical in our matching Puy du Fou capes which we ended up buying as our raincoats did not keep us as dry as we'd hoped. The next performance was inside, thankfully, les mousquetaires de Richelieu, the three musketeers with sword fighting, Spanish dancing, water fountains and much more. When the show was over we exited to find the sun shining and a much more convivial atmosphere for the afternoon shows - Vikings, and Romans, Le signed up triomphe, in a Colosseum. All the shows were spectacular and great to see so many animals involved - Falcons, wolves, hyena, lions, tiger, geese, dogs, horses, camels, emu,....The surroundings were amazing as well with beautiful gardens, forests, villages etc Such a great experience!
maybe one day Ferrymead Heritage Park will come close to it, maybe?...
Our home tonight is a chambre d'hôte in a very old stone manor/farmhouse run by an Irish couple. La Baudinoire! Great place to stay with a lovely garden and pool area to relax in as well as lots of animals for the children to play with, the baby rabbits were a big hit! The only negative was she recommended the most horrendous restaurant to us for dinner. Oh well, we can't complain as we have eaten so well up until now, at least the kids liked what they got.
