Jan 5th-Jan24th
Melbourne, here we are!!. After a knackering 15hr coach drive via an spare hour in Canberra, steve and I arrived in Melbourne. It was well humid, even at 7am when we got off the coach. we were staying in the same hostel as two birds from birmingham Amy and Ruth, who we were meeting up with to do the great ocean road. Once we had caught up with some well earned kip. Steve and I mooched off to hire a car while the girls highlighted their hair for reasons best knon to themselves. We managed to get hold of a rather posh Mitsubihi 380 red thing, with loads of room in the boot for all the crap the girls were bringing with them. Anyway come sunday morning we set off in the rain to head for the great ocean road. First stop was a place called Bells beach which was nice, except it was still raining so we didn't hang around there too long. Then we hit the road all away round the shore line, just like you imagine it would be. Brilliant. We stoped off in a litle place to go to the tourist place and get a map too see what we had to check out along the way. First place we spoted was Erskin falls just up the road. We went and checked out this waterfall before moving onto the pub down the road forsome grub. Greaty Views. Next stop was a chick favourite. A road about as long as mine back home except its crawling with Koalas very slowly doing stuff in the wild. Got a bit of top footage here. The girls loved it. We carried on up the coast to Apollo bay where we got our heads down at the YHA there. Not before going out on the shant though and running into a locals bar where everyone, including the staff were getting really, really pissed. Steve and I treated them to some comedy dancing which went down well.
Up early on the 8th as we had quite a bit to do. Went and checkd out the Ottway lighthouse, which was where they filmed round the twist all those who remember that. We climbed up it and it was a lot bigger than it looked. Incidently we saw a wallaby hoping about on the side of the road which was cool. We then made quite a journey until we reached the Ottway Tree top forest walk. Basically a steel mesh walkway starting from ground level and slowly working its way upto 45m into the rainforest canopy. Well high!!. Wasn't too keen as the walkways between the observation platforms were seethrough so you could see down to the ground and they swayed in the wind.Nasty!!. Anyway after we had knocked this on the head we went and saw the main attraction. The 12 apostles. Prety cool really as they are world famous, and here we were taking some photos over the top of them. Class. We hung around here for a bit before heading to Port Fairy, another small place and another YHA.
9th Jan saw us up early again and head for the grampian mountain ranges, furthur north from the ocean road. Here we drove through huge gorges and forests that were just recovering from a huge forest fire that covered 49% of the area. Pretty eirie. We got to a mountain called Mt William which took 2hrs to climb. Worth it though, as the view of the surrounding area was amazing, it was like being on a plane you felt that high up. Once we had eventually got back down we drove to Halls gap, where we stayed in another YHA. This one was well nice, like a litle forest safari lodge. We threw are stuff in and then jumped back in the car to go check out Mackenzie falls. This place was gorgeous and we could have stayed there all day in the swimming hole at the botom, except we were'nt allowed inti for some reason. Nevermind. We then shot off to hunt for Kangeroos as the girls hadn't seen any in the wild. We saw three hanging around by the road so we jumped out and took some photos. We were prety chuffed that we found some until we got back to the playing fields in halls gap where there was at lest 15 of them grazing in the open for all to see. We managed to infiltrate them and take some videos and stuff which was cool. In the evening we had a barbie and fed the resident possum. We had a few beers in the evening sat outside the YHA playing cards. Halfway through the game we noticed about 10 kangeroos had turned up about 5yrds away grazing on the front lawn, so we watched them for a bit. Pretty smart.
Oh well last day today and a long journey back to Melbourne. It took most of the day but once we checked into our hostel in the city, Steve and I b*****ed off out on the shant. Brilliant trip.
